Arpan Bhowmik
If you hear the name of Kolkata city, the things that come to mind are Howrah Bridge, Writers Building, Tram, Yellow Taxi and Hand Puller Rickshaw to name a few.
Bhowmik through his art wants to keep these images alive. The changing times bring along changing landscapes and visuals, but there will always be icons associated with certain cities and places. Kolkata is already seeing modernization in its landscapes and cityscapes and now it is trickled down to its historic mode of transport. As the production of ambassadors has ceased and the remaining yellow taxis are being used in cities, the yellow taxis will soon become a rare sight in Kolkata Arpan says, “in another decade they will just be a memory” and he wants it to be alive for his son to see and tell stories of. The yellow taxi is one of the many subjects that Bhowmik focuses on, this series, in particular, is an ode to the most hated and loved, mode of transport in Kolkata.
